My Life Changing Experience With Women's Physical Therapy

You may be wondering what the difference between physical therapy and women's physical therapy is. Women's health physical therapy is the treatment of pelvic floor dysfunction. Today I'm partnering with Oscar Health Insurance to share about my experience with this type of therapy and how it's changed my life.

Over 10 years ago I was a young girl trying to figure out what the heck was going on with my body. I had seen a couple of different doctors who couldn't diagnosis what was going on with my lady parts. Finally one gynecologist  referred me to a women's physical therapist to help try to figure out what the heck was going on. I walked in to the appointment with absolutely no clue what was going to happen. I learned quickly the therapist and I were going to became very personal very quickly. I was uncomfortable and it was awkward. This woman who I had just met had her hand inside my body for an hour. Thankfully she was extremely kind, patient and very informative. She taught me so much about women's vaginal health, and over the next few months I began to have hope. Hope that my body would feel better, and I wasn't an odd ball. There were other women out there who also struggled with these issues.

1 out 3 women have some sort of pelvic pain. The problem is many women who suffer from this pain don't understand what is wrong with them. They hide it. They suffer in silence, and think there is nothing they can do about it. It's tough to talk about this topic, but I feel it's important for me to share my story so other women don't feel alone. So they know there are women out there who are experiencing the same thing. Women's health issues and specifically pelvic floor issues need to be talked about more. The more we share, the more doctors learn and the more help we can get. I was fascinated when my therapist told me in France it's required for women to undergo pelvic floor physical therapy after child birth. I think every woman in America could benefit from it! Many women experience pelvic floor issues during or after pregnancy, and many doctors don't educate women about them. Women's health physical therapy can also help bowl and bladder dysfunction (incontinence, urgency, constipation, pain), back pain, and vulvodynia.

I attended therapy weekly, and when I moved to Austin I discovered an amazing therapy center which focused on women's health. Over the years the therapists who have treated me have become close friends, and honestly feel like a god send. If I were to change career paths, I would 100% go in to women's physical therapy, because I've seen first hand the amazing impact they have on women's lives. I was also prescribed dilators to continue the treatment at home.

These sessions were possible because I was covered by insurance. Having insurance gave me peace of mind about treatment. I didn't have to worry about how I was going to afford treatment, but rather focus on how to get better. My marriage and quality of life was extremely impacted by my treatment, and I am forever grateful. Oscar believes that getting covered is important - to get healthy, stay healthy, and get peace of mind.
