Preparing For Summer

The Texas heat has arrived and summer is quickly approaching which means it's officially swim season! We're buying floats, pool toys, and endless amounts of sunscreen in preparation. Over the past year Turner has been taking swim classes at Ready Go Swim in Round Rock and today I'm sharing our experience + ways to practice swim safety with your kiddos.

I've always loved swimming, but I've never been great at it. I grew up in a small town, and having a swim team or school pool was foreign to me. Since living in Austin, I see the opportunity Turner has to swim all year round and even competitively if he chooses. We discovered Ready Go Swim last year, and he's been going once a week for almost a year. He looks forward to his Wednesday night class every week! Not only is it a great way for him to get some energy out, but ultimately he's learning a very important skill which could save his life or someone else's. Drowning is a top of mind concern of parents in the summer, especially when you have young children, so here are some tips to keep your family safe this swim season!

SWIM SAFETY TIPS:

- Always swim with a buddy; do not allow anyone to swim alone.

- Never leave a young child unattended near water and do not trust a child's life to another child; teach children to always ask permission to go near water.

- Have young children or inexperienced swimmers wear U.S Coast Guard approved life jackets around water.

- Maintain constant supervision, and avoid distractions when you are the designated supervisor.

- If you have a pool, secure it with appropriate barriers. Many children who drown in home pools were out of sight for less than five minutes and in the care of one or both parents at the time.

- If a child goes missing, check the water first. Seconds count in preventing death or disability.

Ready Go Swim is family-owned by the sweetest family, and their instructors are attentive, kind and great teachers! Group classes are 30 minutes each and they offer lessons for babies, children and adults ($180 per 8 week course). They also offer Aqua Zumba classes and birthday parties! You can follow them on Instagram and Facebook.
