A year ago I didn't own one plant, and today I have almost thirty in my home! I was so scared I was going to kill them, but slowly I've learned what plants I can and can't keep alive. Indoor plants are my favorite way of decorating my home. They bring beautiful color and texture to every space without feeling like clutter. If you are a complete plant novice my advice is to head to your nearest nursery, and talk to an employee about what you're looking for. Ask them ALL the questions....what types of plants will thrive in your home, what type of pot do you need, how often should you water, etc.

These seven plants I'm recommending are my favorite and require minimal effort and light. I water all of these every 1-2 weeks depending on how dry their soil feels.

1. SNAKE PLANT
Sansevierias (snake plants) are diehard house plants! They require minimal water and can thrive in low or bright light. I love the texture and shape of their tall leaves. If I was going to choose any plant for you to purchase it would be this one!

2. GOLDEN POTHOS
My second favorite plant after the snake plant is a golden pothos. This beautiful plant can be grown indoor or outdoor, and is hard to kill. I love the way it creates a trailing vine over time if you let it grow out. It is poisonous if ingest, so be on alert if you have dogs or cats.

3. ZZ PLANT
With its wide, attractive, dark green leaves, the ZZ plant boasts many favorable traits for offices and homes. It tolerates neglect, is drought tolerant, and accepts low-light conditions without throwing a fit. It grows slowly to a height and width of two to three feet so it doesn't outgrow containers quickly.

4. PARLOR PALM
The parlor palm tree is a quentessiential house plant, because it grows very slowly and thrives in low-light and cramped space. It's a natural air purifier and non-toxic for animals and humans.

5. DRAGON TREE
Dragon trees are tough, drought-tolerant plants that make excellent houseplants. IKEA has a great selection of these, which is where I bought the one in the photograph below. Beautiful as it is, the plant is poisonous to cats and dogs.

6. JANET CRAIG
Dracaena Janet Craig plants are one of the most popular plants used in homes and offices. Dracaenas thrive on neglect, grow well in low light, and need very little water (that's speaking my low maintenance language)! NASA lists them as an excellent clean air plant that helps eliminate harmful toxins from the environment. I bought mine at IKEA and it's been thriving the past year.

7. SPIDER PLANT
Spider plants are considered one of the most adaptable of houseplants and the easiest to grow. This plant can grow in a wide range of conditions and suffers from few problems, other than brown tips. They were once highlighted by NASA for their air-purifying ability.

One of my favorite parts of plant owning is finding the cute planters for them to live in! The best places to shop for unique and affordable pots include TJ Maxx, Home Goods, At Home, and IKEA. Start with one plant and go from there, I promise it will get easier over time. Happy planting!
