Northern California Vacation

I has taken me forever to get this post up, because I've been overwhelmed with all the things I wanted to say about our trip to California this past August..but here it goes!

First stop: San Francisco

We rented a car and learned real quick that we would rather take public transportation. Parking and the fees were a bit of a nightmare, so we took the bus most places.  We stayed in various homes during our trip using AirBnb (some better than others), and kept a pretty tight budget on our expenses.  We both complained at one point that it would be such an easier trip if we were rich.  But then we remembered that we are blessed extremely to even be able to come on a trip like this, even if we're eating super cheap, taking buses because we can't afford taxis, and sleeping in people's extended garages.  Below are some pics of the main stops we made while in the city!

We ate at some great places in San Francisco, and I might have had a Nutella crepe every day.

- Tony's Pizza Napoletana
Blue Mermaid (Clam chowder - Fisherman's Wharf)
Ghirardelli Square - The BEST salted caramel hot chocolate I've ever had. Alex and I still dream about it.
Limon Rotisserie (Peruvian restaurant in the Mission district)
Buena Vista Cafe (Famous Irish coffee)
- Freddie's Sandwiches

After two crazy packed days in San Francisco we were excited to head out of the city. San Fran is beautiful, but I'm not much for loud noises and crowds of people.  The streets were busy, and at times I felt a bit overwhelmed.  We headed south for the infamous Highway 1, but we made a few stops along the way.

First stop, breakfast at Nini's in San Mateo (we searched yelp reviews and found this hidden gem).  Oh my goodness, the breakfast here was amazing! Best pancakes I've ever had.

And of course, Apple. We couldn't drive through Northern California without seeing the mothership.

After a few hours driving down Highway 1 and walking around Pfeiffer beach, we headed to Carmel where we stayed for the night.  The city of Carmel was amazingly cute. I wanted to buy every little home, which might have been out of my budget a few million dollars. I wish the home we stayed at for the night was still listed on Airbnb, because it was insane! Honestly, staying there might have been one of our favorite parts of the trip.  It was a gorgeous mansion tucked away in Monterey, owned by retired multi-millionaires who liked to have travelers around.  We asked the home owner if he had any recommendations for dinner, and he replied "Well, I own a restaurant, you could go there if you like Italian." Umm...sure.

We spent one short day on the coast of Big Sur and Carmel, and then headed north to Napa the next morning.  Our road trip was quite interesting in our TINY rental car.   Alex could barely fit, but the pro was it was super easy to park.

NAPA
Napa is one of those places you "must" see, but honestly it wasn't my favorite.  The vineyards were a beautiful site, but I'm not a fan of wine.  We experienced one tasting at Bell Winery, and then explored downtown Napa. Definitely check out Oxbow Public Market for a great local market experience.

For dinner we had a delicious Italian meal at Ristorante Allegria (an old bank), and went off the beaten path to a dive bar called the Green Door.  We were told by locals it was "rough" and they didn't serve wine, so we headed straight there ; ).  This was our favorite night of the trip.  We chatted with the locals, played a ton of country on the juke box, and received a round of applause after we danced to our wedding song (I Just Want To Dance With You by George Strait).

Our favorite night of the entire trip was hanging out in a Napa dive bar (The Green Door).  After we had dinner, we asked locals for bar recommendations.  We told them we weren't big wine drinkers, and that we wanted a very local spot.  One guy said.."Ohhhh...you could go to the Green Door, but it's pretty rough." Alex and I looked at each other, and thought what is "rough" in Napa?  We headed straight there. We were greeted by a cloud of smoke, a juke box, and the neighborhood drinkers.  It was perfect.  I played lots of George Strait and at one point played our wedding song, I Just Want to Dance with You.  A few people had been dancing, so I pulled Alex out on to the dance floor.  We two stepped, and when the song ended we got a round of applause from the entire bar. It was hilarious! Everyone was freaking out about seeing a real two-step.  We ended up leaving early because a guy was hitting on me right in front of Alex, not that Alex cared when he bought me a shot...but it got weird after a while...seriously weird.

We only spent one day in Napa, and headed back to San Francisco for 2 more days before flying back home. We actually felt the earthquake on our last night in San Fran on Castro street.

We had an amazing week, and can't wait for our next trip together (Hawaii in June).  I would much rather save money for traveling than on material items like a car or clothes.  These memories will last a lifetime.  We missed Turner so much, but I truly believe parents need to take time away from their children and build special memories between just the two of them.  Alex and I forget sometimes that we are best friends, and can easily become roommates in the chaos of life.  Trips like this help us to reconnect, and we hope to take a trip just the two of us every year.

We've Got A Problem

Where do I begin.  Lets just say my 4 day vacation/weekend did not go as planned. My in-laws took Turner for the weekend, so Alex and I could celebrate our anniversary and work on our master bedroom/bath.  My original plan was to finish painting all of the trim/doors/cabinets.  There was a small piece of trim in the bathroom that was slightly detached from the wall.  Friday morning, I asked Alex if he could secure it to the wall before I began painting, and in the process he started peeling back the layers. To make a long story short, we had a water leak.  If you know Alex, you know he immediately took action....with a sledge hammer.  He might have accidentally broke the toilet with it in the process...what's another couple of hundred dollars at this point!?

I can't explain the amount of stress that overcame me when my weekend plans were dramatically changed and so was our budget.  My bedroom was a disaster zone, and I knew Turner would be home in only a few days.  At a certain point, I had to sit outside on our patio and take a breather.  My mom reminded me that I should feel lucky I even have a bathroom to renovated, and that at least we have a second bathroom to use in the mean time.  I had to remind myself that it was not the end of the world, and that I am extremely blessed for all that I have in life.  After demoing all day Friday and most of Saturday, we finally realized that it's possible our homeowner's insurance would cover this loss.  We set up a claim, and won't know till tomorrow.  We will still be out of pocket almost $2,000 for our deductible, but we might have spent that much doing the renovation on our own and hopefully it will be done quickly!

In regards to painting, I wasn't able to work on the bathroom (obviously), but I did finish our bedroom trim, bathroom cabinets, built in shelves/desk and closet trim. I used Sherwin-Williams Snowbound for all trim/doors/cabinets.  I can officially say I am done painting doors! 8 bedroom/bathroom doors and 8 closet doors.

Friday, we celebrated our 4th anniversary at a local Italian restaurant, and went country dancing with friends!  When not painting, we were at Home Depot or Lowe's or eating out.  We did a lot of eating out, because we were baby free and the last thing I wanted to do was cook. I'm sad to say goodbye to the weekend, but so happy to be reunited with Turner.  Our family just isn't complete without him.

Here's a post and another post on my previous painting vacations.  You get the picture, anytime I have free time I'm painting.  My goal is to have the entire interior (every room/every piece of trim/every wall) of our house painted by our 1 year anniversary of owning it. I'm so close!

Have you ever had a project turn in to something much bigger than you ever expected? If so, what are your tips for handling the stress of it all?

Traveling + Marriage

The flights are booked!  Alex and I are planning our first trip to California to celebrate 4 years of marriage, and enjoy some alone time without our little man. We've both never been, so we're extremely excited to explore the golden state.  We're focusing on northern California, and flying in and out of San Francisco (5 days, 4 nights).  We plan to rent a car and drive down the coast to Big Sur, and stay the night in Carmel/Monterey and spent the rest of our nights in San Francisco.  We'll also be stopping by Cupertino (Alex's request) to visit Apple's headquarters.

I would LOVE to hear of your favorite spots and any tips to make our trip the best! Restaurants? Entertainment? Beaches? Etc?

As I look back over the years, I feel very blessed to have been able to travel with Alex.  It's a huge part of our lives and memories, and we both feel that it is extremely important for our marriage as well as our overall happiness.  Don't get me wrong, you don't have to travel to be happy, but researchers do say it helps. One study found that the anticipation of vacation and the simple act of planning leads to an increase in happiness. I definitely am a believer of that, because I am already eagerly looking forward to our trip and have enjoyed planning out the details.  We booked our trip for mid-august, because honestly we wanted to have several months to save, and have something to look forward to.

Most of all, I think it is important to experience new things and create memories together that we can reminisce over through out our lives.  Life can get mundane at times, and a short trip can excite things, and help us to remember why we are best friends.  A weekend trip or even just a day can even do the trick.

We started traveling together when we were just friends studying abroad in college.  Little did we know 2 years later we would be married.  Here are the places out of state we have traveled together.

Berchtesgaden, Austria (On top of Hitler's Eagles Nest...there is also a bird's nest on my head) 2008

Frankfurt, Germany just before we flew back to Texas after months of traveling and studying. (I'm wearing a traditional Dirndl, and I had just chopped all my hair off. Alex wasn't a fan)

A Week Away

I've never left Turner for longer than a day, and this week I'm on a work trip in Illinois for 6 days.  I am excited for a full night's sleep and unlimited Bravo, but I'm going to miss Mr. T like crazy (you too Alex).  Thank goodness for FaceTime.  Alex will actually be getting a week of sleep as well, because my in-laws will be watching Turner.  I'm going to try to enjoy the free time, and my big comfy hotel bed.

My trip started off well, when I noticed Tony Hale aka Buster from Arrested Development in the security line at the Austin airport.  He was so nice, and asked me if I wanted to take a picture.

If you have young children, what is the longest amount of time you've been away from them? How did you handle it?

Port A Weekend

Alex and I took a short trip to the beach this weekend with my sister/bro-in-law and my nieces.  We went mainly so Alex could go fishing, but for the second year in a row he caught absolutely nothing ; ) Even though we were just a 10 min walk from the beach, we actually never stepped foot on it.  Kind of sad that I had no desire to go, but I'm just not in to the sand sometimes.  All 8 of us stayed in an RV, and boy did I learn quick that I do not want 4 kids (3 is now pushing it).  I love my nieces to death, but they are a lot of work! Not the most relaxing weekend, but always worthwhile when I get see family.

Beach Belly

Warning! You are about to be blinded by a very white belly! Alex and I had to document my growing stomach in Port A, even though it was covered up most of the time by a fishing shirt. I still feel like people think I have a beer gut, so I'm a bit skiddish about letting the sucker out.  The best part about being pregnant at the beach was that I could scarf down a full bag of Cheetos and a hot dog, and still feel perfectly ready to go out in my bathing suit. Nothing like a bloated belly to help me float in the water.

"Am I being Punk'd?"

For Memorial Day weekend, Alex and I took a short trip to Port Aransas with family.  I ate junk food and processed meats all weekend, didn't get a hint of a tan because I lathered myself in sunscreen and wore a fishing shirt most of the time, and officially become the designated golf cart driver (thank you pregnancy).  My family rented some awesome 6 person golf carts that we drove all over town, and at night were quite the adventure when you have drunk adults screaming directions at you.

Now, for my horror story.
One afternoon when we were on the beach, I drove the golf cart down to the nearest porta potty. I grabbed the golf cart key and hesitantly walked in. I plugged my nose, and tried my hardest not to look down. Suddenly, I heard this high pitch noise, that sounded just like a key falling. Oh yes, I dropped the key in to the toilet. Words can't describe the "Oh crap" feeling I experienced at that moment. Not only was the rental quite expensive, but it wasn't my golf cart to start with. Yep, I was screwed.  Now, the horror begins. I proceeded to stare into the toilet searching for the key, but after 10 minutes of staring at the most disgusting things you've ever seen in your life, I gave up.  I seriously stood up at one moment, and thought, "Seriously! I'm either in a horror movie or I'm getting punk'd."  Thankfully,  we were able to get a copy of the key, and I didn't have to make the plunge.

Lesson learned: Don't take anything important in to a porta potty!

Viva Las Vegas

A couple of weeks ago Alex and I went on a quick trip to Vegas.  It wasn't my first choice, especially since I can't drink, and when you think of Vegas you think of drinking and gambling.  We did the gambling part, until we lost $50 in 5 minutes and I literally had a break down in the MGM casino.  I started crying, and thought "OMG...My husband is turning in to Clark Griswold. He's going to spend our entire nest egg." Which luckily after the first day, we set a budget for how much to gamble with and that calmed my nerves.  Vegas is one of those destinations that's good to see once, but I would never go back.  Just not for me.

The shows were the best part of the trip. We saw Penn & Teller and Cirque Du Soleil "O".  Oh, and did I mention that our hotel had a crepe restaurant!? Crepes were everywhere in Vegas so I was in nutella heaven.  I did absolutely no shopping in Vegas, even though there were amazing shopping centers, but crazy high end.  Who can shop at those places? Then Alex reminded me how often the Kardashian's visit Vegas.

I'm glad we went, but I was ready to be on that plane headed back to Austin after 4 days.

Thanks lady to the left for standing in front of the sign for 15 minutes with your stupid paper doll.
