TX Hill Country | Frio River

Every time I visit the Texas Hill Country I'm in awe of it's beauty. Alex and I took the kids for a quick 24 hour trip to Leakey, TX on July 4th and I'm recapping where we stayed and what we did.

My sis and her husband's side of the family have been going for the past 7 years, but thankfully we were able to crash the party this year. They stay the whole week, but I didn't have enough vacation days to stay longer than one night. We stayed at the River Bluff Cabins, which are located right along the Frio River. It's the perfect location as the water has it's shallow and deep parts so kids of all ages can enjoy the water. The cabins also make a big circle, and there is a playground, volleyball net, and basketball hoop in the center so your kids can play and you never have to leave your front porch.

One day we floated the river, which I hadn't done in 12 years! My mom watched Whitney, and the babysitter my sister hired watched Walt (genius to hire a vacation babysitter)! Turner sat in my lap while we floated, and half the time complained it was too cold. I loved being able to spend quality time with my sister, bro-in-law, brother, sis-in-law, 5 nieces and nephew. If you're interested in floating this area, check out Happy Hollow on The Frio, for transportation and tubes.

If you've never been to this area and you live in Texas, you must check it out! It brought back a lot of memories, as I went to church camp just down the road at Alto Frio for many years. Know that the River Bluff Cabins book almost a year in advance, but there are lots of great options in the area. Garner State Park is just down the road as well, so there is so much to do in the area (fishing, hiking, kayaking and more).

An hour north on the Guadalupe river you'll find another favorite spot of mine, Mo-Ranch, in Hunt, TX. I've vacationed there since a child, and will be heading back with my neighbors this August.

Thanks for sharing! I can't believe I've never taken my kids to the Frio. Looks like a perfect getaway.
