Alex and I escaped the hustle and bustle of the city last weekend and headed to the adorable town of Wimberley, TX. I was so excited to partner with Homeaway for this trip and stay at one of the most unique homes I've ever seen! Check out what we did, where we ate, and take a tour of the perfect vacation rental.
WHERE WE STAYED:
I stumbled upon the beautiful Cedar Creek Lodge on HomeAway's website and fell in love! When we arrived everyone was blown away by its exposed cedar columns and open floor plan. We arrived at night so when the sun came up the next morning we were pleasantly surprised by our view, 12 acres of beautiful green grass. Not a road or home in sight which was very peaceful! On the other side of the fence there were longhorns and other cattle, and the kids loved taking a walk to talk to them.
The house had two bedrooms downstairs (king and queen bed), and one bedroom upstairs (king) with an upstairs deck overlooking the front half of the ranch. There is a covered pavilion in the back which is perfect for parties or even a small wedding. I can't forget the pool and jetted hot tub! It was too cold for the pool, but we all enjoyed the hot tub! At night after the kids were in bed, the adults went out to the hot tub and enjoyed some wine and fellowship. It was a relaxing way to wind down after a busy day.
The kitchen was the perfect size to cook with a large group of friends due to the open floor plan, bar, and large dining table. Our last night there we ate outside around the rock fire pit.
HomeAway vacation rentals are perfect for larger group travel. Our group included 4 adults and 5 children and the home was the perfect size! It's only a few minutes from downtown Wimberley and less than an hour from Austin. I HIGHLY recommend this property if you are looking for a great vacation spot in the Texas hill country. HomeAway has a ton of other options in the area as well, check them out here!
ACTIVITIES:
BLUE HOLE REGIONAL PARK: This was a beautiful and well designed park in downtown Wimberley. The main attraction is the Blue Hole swimming area, which is open from May to September. I've never seen such blue and crystal clear water in Texas before. There are picnic tables and a large lawn for people to eat, relax, and enjoy hanging out by the water. Due to it's popularity, this year they will be on a reservation system, and swimming is only available on the weekend. The park also has soccer and basketball fields, numerous walking trails, and a playscape for kids.
SHOPPING: Downtown Wimberley is tiny yet full of character. You can stroll from shop to shop, and each one has its own uniqueness. Clothing, vintage, home decor, candles, art, plants, body and bath and more. Starting the first weekend of March their Annual Market Days will begin which lasts till December. It's on the first Saturday of every month and there are over 475 booths. As Turner and I strolled downtown we walked past an amazing band playing and the sweetest couple two-stepping. This is why I love Texas!
WINE TASTING: If you enjoy wine, Wimberley is the perfect destination! There are wineries all around, and the Texas Hill Country scenery makes sipping on a glass of wine even better. We had a glass of wine at the Duchman Winery which was right next door to a restaurant we ate at. We noticed lots of buses and limos bringing friends and groups for wine tastings. We didn't get a chance to go to any other wineries (thanks kids), but here are a few that were highly recommended; Driftwood Estate Winery, Wimberley Valley Winery, and Bella Vista Ranch (olive tasting + wine).
JACOB'S WELL: We didn't get a chance to visit Jacob's Well, but it's on my bucket list! It's less than 4 miles from downtown Wimberley.
WHERE WE ATE:
THE LEANING PEAR: Many people recommended The Leaning Pear when we asked for a great spot to eat and enjoy a glass of local wine. I enjoyed their roasted chicken and cheese bacon grits, and Alex had the corned beef reuben. It's Wimberley's destination spot for unique, well-crafted, delicious food in a idyllic hill-country setting. I highly recommend, and would love to go back one day when I can sit and enjoy my meal without having to chase kids ; ).
TRATTORIA LISINA: I was blown away by the beauty of this classic Italian restaurant. Absolutely gorgeous inside and outside PLUS they have a kids playscape...game changer! I ordered the spaghetti carbonara, crispy brussel sprouts, and a glass of moscato (I'm a wimp and can only handle sweet wine). I'm still dreaming of my meal because it was so stinking good! Alex ordered the Lasagna Bolognese and the kids shared a margherita pizza. If it was warm enough we would have dined on the patio next to the fountain and lawn where kids can play.
PAPA HOO'S: Turner and I visited Papa Hoo's Hill Country Popcorn while we strolled downtown Wimberley. The had over 45 flavors of popcorn, and you can sample them! Turner went for the sweet flavors like cherry and cotton candy, and I went for more savory flavors like dill pickle and spicy buffalo. They also have candy by the pound and old fashioned glass bottle drinks, including root beers and sodas.
The rest of the trip we ate at our vacation house, which included breakfast tacos in the morning and beef stroganoff for dinner. It was nice to have a kitchen to cook in so we didn't spend so much on food!
It's crazy to think I've lived in South Texas almost my entire life, and this was my first time visiting Wimberley (I played a soccer game once here in high school but that doesn't count). I was blown away, and can't wait to come back for a girls trip!
