Caring for Toddler Twins

Tracking Pixel

I won't say taking care of toddler twins is harder than caring for newborn twins, because at least I get to sleep these days! Each age comes with a different set of challenges, but Walt and Whitney's personalities are really starting to shine since they turned two years old a month ago.

I'm partnering with Dove to share how Alex and I care for Walt and Whitney, and what steps we're taking this winter to keep their skin moisturized.

Walt and Whitney are officially toddlers even though I call them babies half the time. With each stage I'm learning and adjusting to what they need physically and emotionally.  When they were newborns I was up ALL night, constantly feeding, changing diapers, washing bottles, and holding babies. I was exhausted but as a twin mom you learn to push through. I would enter survival mode many times throughout their first two years of life. Alex and I have a lot more wrinkles and gray hair, but we are stronger than ever before. A night out or a kidless vacation are pure luxuries, and we take full advantage of them when we are able to get away just us two.

What I've loved most is seeing how each twin has their own unique personality. Whitney is sassy and has the most adorable facial expressions. She can turn it on and off in a second. She loves to dance, roughhouse with Turner, and give kisses. Walt is a softy and goofball. He loves to cuddle and wants to be held 24/7. I love watching them play and talk to each other.

Not only are their personalities different, but their skin, diet, looks and hair are so much different. Walt has curly blonde hair, and Whitney has straight red hair. Something I noticed early on was Walt had eczema, while Whitney rarely struggled with it. Thankfully, I discovered Baby Dove Tip to Toe Wash for bath time, and Baby Dove Rich Moisture Lotion for after baths. Walt's arms and legs get very dry, but since we've started consistently using Baby Dove products his eczema has almost completely disappeared!

The best part is I know both products are safe for Whitney, which helps when I bathe them together. Right now that's 100% of the time. Our bedtime routine involves dinner, a bath (although sometimes the bath comes before dinner because I need a way to keep them busy while Alex cooks), then I chase naked babies across the house and apply Baby Dove Rich Moisture Lotion to lock in moisture. This dry and cold Texas winter has been rough, but thanks to Dove Walt's eczema hasn't flared up. Baby Dove has a ton of amazing products that go beyond mildness to replenish essential moisture and nutrients in babies' skin! Their products are also dermatologist and pediatrician tested and hypoallergenic for all babies' skin types.

I change a lot less diapers, and I don't have to watch them as closely. Well, I'm not 100% sure on that one because I'm constantly having to make sure they don't climb on the kitchen counter, write on my walls, get in to my cabinets, run in to the street, and slam each others fingers in a door. They love opening and closing doors, except with twins someone is always bound to get a finger smashed. They haven't mastered the "I shouldn't do this because I could really hurt myself." Whitney has crawled out of her crib a few times, but I'm hoping I can keep them sleeping in their cribs till they are three!

Not only is caring for each one different physically but also emotionally. I've learned what easily makes Walt upset vs. Whitney, and how each one reacts to certain tones and commands. When I discipline one the other one usually gets upset or will try to console the other. What may work for one doesn't always work for the other and I'm learning every day what each one needs from me.

Raising twins is one of my greatest challenges yet greatest joys. I never want to tell others how to parent their children, I simply want to share my experience in hopes it might help someone who is going through a similar situation. I also enjoy sharing products my family loves to use, and we've always been a fan of Baby Dove products for our babies' skin. It really is a superior way to care for baby's skin with their Rich Moisture and Sensitive Moisture ranges. Learn more about Baby Dove products by visiting Dove.com.
