Relaxing Weekend in Salado, TX

Salado, TX is a quaint town centrally located between Austin and Waco (50 minutes from each). I spent the most relaxing weekend at the historic Stagecoach Inn nestled in the heart of Salado, and today I'm giving you all the details of this hidden gem.

Directly off of i35 between Temple and Austin you will find the Stagecoach Inn. It was founded in 1861 and is believed to be the oldest remaining structure in Salado. Many varied and distinguished persons found food and rest inside its walls: Sam Houston, General George Custer, Robert E. Lee, Jr., cattle barons Shanghai Pierce and Charles Goodnight, and outlaws Sam Bass and Jesse James.

It is a popular meeting spot for people traveling across Texas, and for many years was one of the most renowned highway restaurants in the country: Featured in Life Magazine and TIME.

The Stagecoach Inn has been recently renovated with a mixture of Palm Springs and Texas ranch aesthetic with a retro and historic vibe! I was in awe of every detail as I walked around the property. Giant oak and pecan trees shade the rooms and pool, and sprawling greenery divides the spaces. We started the weekend off with a round of golf at the beautiful Mill Creek Golf Club located along the Salado Creek. After golf we checked in to the hotel and walked across the street for lunch at Chupacabra Kitchen. Salado is a tiny town but has over 130 businesses and a lot of fun activities for families. Breweries, candy shops, restaurants and antique shops are all condensed in the town's center. The spring-fed Salado Creek is near all the action downtown and is the perfect spot for kid's to swim.

After doing some exploring we headed back to the hotel pool and enjoyed fresh hibiscus margaritas. The main event was dinner at the Stagecoach Inn Restaurant, famous for their hush puppies. Oh my goodness, they did not disappoint. We enjoyed Sweet and savory with homemade whipped honey butter....my mouth is watering writing this. Alex and I enjoyed deviled eggs, BBQ shrimp with jalapeño creamed corn, a grilled ribeye and flavorful craft cocktails. The beautiful Shady Villa Bar located inside offers wine, classic and creative cocktails, and a large beer selection. While we were dining, we heard two different tables say they were from Austin and had drove up just to eat at the restaurant.

24 hours was way too short and we will definitely be back for a longer weekend! I felt an overwhelming sense of peace and an easy going pace while we were there. Put this on your travel list, as it's the perfect location if you are heading to Waco for Magnolia or to explore Austin! I would love to go back with a group of girlfriends to relax, enjoy some great food and cocktails, and disconnect from the busyness of life.

This trip was hosted but all thoughts and opinions are my own.
