What Is a Personal Color Analysis?

Personal color analyses are growing in popularity and I 100% understand why! It was an amazing experience and today I'm giving you a detailed look at the process, what you receive and pricing.

About House of Colour
House of Colour, the official Color and Style analysis company, started in the mid 1980's. Their consultants use a time-tested color analysis process to discover your color palette, match makeup to your personal coloring, and then help you find your perfect lipsticks. The goal is to find the colors that compliment your skin tone and make you feel confident. Every person will fall into one of the color groups - Fall, Winter, Spring or Summer.

You can find a consultant in your area by searching here. I had my color anlaysis done by Magan who is located in Pflugerville.

How long is the consultation?
1.5 - 2 hours

How much is it?
$290

What comes with the price?
A color and makeup consult, swatch fan and a booklet of the season's information (includes your color ratings which I will explain later)

What is the process:
I met Magan in her home office and removed all my makeup, covered my clothing and pulled my hair back so no color was showing. Magan draped a number of different colored silk scarves around my shoulders. Each season had its own set of scarves, so a 'blue' isn't the same 'blue' from one season to the next. These colored scarves help the consultant see if your undertones are cool or warm, and if your coloring is clear or muted. I saw immediately what colors were flattering on my skin, and my consultant agreed. It was amazing to see how one blue could completely wash me out, yet a different shade a blue brought my face to life! I am a SPRING, which to be honest I wasn't super excited about because there are many colors I don't love and have never worn. With each season there is also the jewelry that compliments your skin tone - silver or gold. Thankfully I was gold because it's pretty much all I wear.

After determining my season, Magan then placed the scarves near my face again to pinpoint my 'WOW' colors - colors that harmonize with your natural coloring, and make you look your best. At the end of the session you are given a booklet and 36 color swatch fan called your color wheel. The booklet indicates what percentage of a certain color you should wear (100%, 75%, 50%, 25%) and serves as a good guide when shopping. The color wheel is EXTREMELY helpful when shopping.

She then walked me through makeup that compliments my skin including the top three shades of lipstick, as well as foundation and blush. This was HUGE for me because I've never been into makeup. Now when I walk in to Sephora I know EXACTLY what I'm looking for. And if choosing your own makeup is too difficult for you, House of Colour sells their own line of makeup and provides exact matches to your season!

I found out that black is not one of my flattering colors however that doesn't mean I'm going to toss every item of black clothing in my closet. It's a process of slowly incorporating new pieces. I will tell you since having my color analysis I've had much more fun with color. I'm stepping outside my comfort zone of wearing mainly neutrals and choosing vibrant pieces such as pink Uggs over brown. When deciding on a dress for an event and there are 5 colors to choose from my color wheel makes it much easier to choose!

Reasons to consider a color analysis:
- You want to learn how to wear colors that you know will look good on you
- You want to be more intentional with your clothing purchases, potentially build a capsule wardrobe
- You buy clothes you never wear
- You're not sure what makeup looks best on you
- You want a wardrobe that works with itself
- You want to be more productive and have an easier time shopping

I understand this is a big expense, but I promise you won't regret it! It would be a great birthday or Christmas present for anyone in your life (including men). If you are a HOC Spring follow me on Instagram for outfit ideas!

Hi Jesse,

I came across your post when searching about HOC Spring type. I was typed Winter by HOC, but I was told that I can work with clear and bright warm colors as well from another color analyst. I already got a spring fan from HOC but feel like I’m missing the makeup colors and palette info from the HOC booklet. This might be a random question - do you still have the booklet with you?
