Fall Family Photos

The last time the 5 of us took a photo together the babies were 5lbs each and only a few days old, so I was extremely excited for this Fall shoot with Laura Morsman! Can you believe she got all these great shots in 15 minutes?! That's Laura working here mini session magic for you!

I received lots of compliments on our outfits so I thought I would give you my tips for coordinating family outfits. First off let me say that going from 3 outfits to 5 outfits was a big jump, and I was overwhelmed at first.

Family Yearbook 2016

One of my favorite new traditions is to order a family yearbook every year to document the stages of our children, marriage, vacations, and more! It's honestly the easiest way for me to print the hundreds of pictures I take throughout the year. I ordered the book through Shutterfly and it totaled $57. I had a 50% coupon and the shipping was free.  I started off with the 20 page book thinking I would be able to fit everything in it, but ended up with 35 total pages! Some of my pages include;

  • Turner and all of the firsts he experienced as a 2/3 year old (I have a ton of pages dedicated to him)
  • Hawaii Vacation
  • 5 Year Anniversary
  • Holidays w/family
  • Summer Activities
  • Weekly baby bump photos
I think my favorite pages are the ones dedicated to pictures of Turner with me or Alex. Those snapshots capture a few of the moments we've bonded as parents with Turner.

Family Photos with Mallorie Owens Photography

I'm so thankful Mallorie of Mallorie Owens Photography came to our home to photograph our family of 5. The babies were just 10 days old. I was a hot mess prior to the shoot trying to look decent, and wrangling my 3 year old to sit still for photos was not an easy task. Thankfully Mallorie was super patient and sweet and the photos came out amazing! Turner really is obsessed with his new brother and sister, and the photos of him glancing in to their crib shows a tiny glimpse of their relationship. Seeing the photos of us all together makes me smile. I truly can't believe we are a family of 5, we are complete.

If you are looking for a photographer, I highly recommend Mallorie. She's super kind, professional, and is great with families. Find her on Facebook here or her website!

Family Photo Session w/ Lindsey V. Rivera Photography

Alex and I really wanted to capture our family of 3 before the TWINS are born. Turner is such a light in our lives, and having Lindsey from Lindsey V. Rivera Photography capture his personality in these photos is a wonderful gift.  She also shot some photos for our big pregnancy announcement here!

Turner lasted about 45 minutes and it took a lot of bribing to get him to cooperate, but I'm beyond happy with how these photos turned out. We headed to the water at the end of the shoot, and I'm so glad we did! Lindsey is a mom herself so she understood the dynamics of shooting a toddler with a big personality, and her goal is to capture families in the moment (less poses) which I love!

Family Photos with Kim Neuman Photography

We ventured out the cold morning after Halloween at 7:45am (a bit rough as we had a party at our house the night before) to take family photos w/Kim of Kim Neuman PhotographyKim was great and found these beautiful blue doors for us to pose in front of in Georgetown. Aren't they amazing?! Kim took Turner's 2 year photos in Georgetown as well. Turner wasn't very cooperative (what you would expect from an active 2 year old boy), but Kim was able to get some amazing shots in less than 30 minutes! Once again, I love having family photos to remember this time in our lives. Thank you Kim!

Guest Post: What to Wear for Family Photos

I'm excited to have my friend and wonderful photographer, Kim of Kim Neuman Photography, talk about what to wear for your family photos! Kim took Turner's 2 year old photos last month, and I can't wait for our family photos. I'll be taking tips from Kim, because it is not as easy as I thought coordinating outfits for my family.

"It’s that time of year again!  Your family’s holiday card is going to be the best on everyone’s mantel.  You have your favorite photographer booked. You’ve picked out a super cute location and your session will be during golden hour so you get that warm, glowing light that is oh so flattering. But what are you going to wear?? That is the million-dollar question, isn’t it? It certainly is one that most of my clients seem to struggle with, and I’m sure you are too! Don’t worry, you are not alone and I’m here to offer you some pieces of advice.

I always suggest my clients start with whomever is going to be the most difficult family member to dress. That may be dad, baby sister, teenage brother, or even mom. No matter who it is, start with him or her because you will build your wardrobe around that outfit, instead of running around town trying to find something he or she will wear that fits in with everyone else. Trust me on this!

I recommend three or four colors. We definitely don’t want everyone wearing the same exact outfit; that is terribly dated and you will not love those images. Finding outfits that coordinate is a bit more work, but totally worth the effort! You can choose color families (earth tones, jewel tones, etc.) or you can go for complimentary colors (colors that are opposites on the color wheel). I’m not saying that you have to go with bright purple and bright yellow, but you could use gray as your main color and throw in buttery yellow shades and deep purples. There are many different ways to work in your colors. I love layers and accessories.  Think earrings, necklaces, hats, scarves, belts, and headbands.

I recommend giving yourself a good two to three weeks to get your outfits together to find sizes and correct colors, especially if you are ordering online.  It might be a good idea to buy a few different things for your children to see what they are comfortable in.  Make sure to keep those receipts handy!

Please don’t forget footwear!  We don’t want your running shoes in your family photo, friends.  I know it sounds like a relatively small detail, and they probably won’t be in every picture, but they are really important.  If you’ve spent the time and the money on getting professional portraits, those dingy whites Nikes are going to ruin the shot.  Again, trust me on this!

My final recommendation, for mom, is to try on your outfit and have someone snap a picture of you in it.  That way you’ll know how you look in it and if you truly like it.  We all know that looking in the mirror is totally different than looking at a picture of yourself!  And, we also know that if mom doesn’t like how SHE looks in the picture, she doesn’t like the picture, no matter how perfect everyone else is!

I hope you’ve found these tips helpful and here are some of my go-to places for family outfits:  GAP, Old Navy, Zara, H&M, Matilda Jane Clothing, and J. Crew/Crewcuts. You don’t need to get everyone’s outfits from the same place! Nordstrom is a great place to go if you need to grab a pair of shoes for the kiddos. Enjoy pulling your wardrobe together!"

Family Photos

I'm sharing a few family photos my sister took quickly of us for our Christmas card.  We can't afford to pay a photographer every time we want a family photo taken (which seems to be the norm now), so my sis and I try to make due with our cameras.  I have a DSLR camera, but honestly I have no idea how to really use it.  It's on my list of things I need to learn.
