The PERFECT Shade of Gray Paint

When I set out to paint my ENTIRE house, the task of choosing paint seemed daunting. However, I found a trick, choosing one paint swatch and using it throughout my entire home. After testing out tons of gray paints from Sherwin-Williams, I fell in LOVE with the color PASSIVE.  I decided to paint my kitchen and living room in this color, because it was light and had a cool undertone.  

Now, the dilemma...I love color, but I never wanted to paint again so I had to choose a neutral color for the rest of the house.  Once I painted my living room and kitchen Passive, I was sold on the color and decided to paint the guest bedrooms and hallway the same color.

For my guest bathroom, I stuck with the same paint swatch but went two shades darker to GRAY MATTERS. Loved it! 

When painting my master bathroom and bedroom, I wanted the color to be very light (almost white), so I went to the lightest shade on the paint swatch and used NEBULOUS WHITE. Ahhh! I'm obsessed. It's very light, but has a tiny hint of gray with a blueish undertone, so my white doors and trim still pop. It made my bathroom feel like a spa by giving it that light and refreshing feel, and it makes the room feel much bigger.




Now, NOT every room in my entire house is gray. My laundry room was painted using Sherwin-Williams SEA SALT.

We've Got A Problem

Where do I begin.  Lets just say my 4 day vacation/weekend did not go as planned. My in-laws took Turner for the weekend, so Alex and I could celebrate our anniversary and work on our master bedroom/bath.  My original plan was to finish painting all of the trim/doors/cabinets.  There was a small piece of trim in the bathroom that was slightly detached from the wall.  Friday morning, I asked Alex if he could secure it to the wall before I began painting, and in the process he started peeling back the layers. To make a long story short, we had a water leak.  If you know Alex, you know he immediately took action....with a sledge hammer.  He might have accidentally broke the toilet with it in the process...what's another couple of hundred dollars at this point!?

I can't explain the amount of stress that overcame me when my weekend plans were dramatically changed and so was our budget.  My bedroom was a disaster zone, and I knew Turner would be home in only a few days.  At a certain point, I had to sit outside on our patio and take a breather.  My mom reminded me that I should feel lucky I even have a bathroom to renovated, and that at least we have a second bathroom to use in the mean time.  I had to remind myself that it was not the end of the world, and that I am extremely blessed for all that I have in life.  After demoing all day Friday and most of Saturday, we finally realized that it's possible our homeowner's insurance would cover this loss.  We set up a claim, and won't know till tomorrow.  We will still be out of pocket almost $2,000 for our deductible, but we might have spent that much doing the renovation on our own and hopefully it will be done quickly!

In regards to painting, I wasn't able to work on the bathroom (obviously), but I did finish our bedroom trim, bathroom cabinets, built in shelves/desk and closet trim. I used Sherwin-Williams Snowbound for all trim/doors/cabinets.  I can officially say I am done painting doors! 8 bedroom/bathroom doors and 8 closet doors. 

Friday, we celebrated our 4th anniversary at a local Italian restaurant, and went country dancing with friends!  When not painting, we were at Home Depot or Lowe's or eating out.  We did a lot of eating out, because we were baby free and the last thing I wanted to do was cook. I'm sad to say goodbye to the weekend, but so happy to be reunited with Turner.  Our family just isn't complete without him.






Here's a post and another post on my previous painting vacations.  You get the picture, anytime I have free time I'm painting.  My goal is to have the entire interior (every room/every piece of trim/every wall) of our house painted by our 1 year anniversary of owning it. I'm so close!

Painting Recap

I did it! I successfully completed my list of painting projects this past week (minus painting the inside of the closets white).  I painted non stop Wednesday through Sunday from 8am to around 6pm. I can't wait to show you the finished projects, but here are a few pictures that sum up my "vacation".

1. Removed all doors, cabinets and hardware (this took me forever

2. Deglossed EVERYTHING, and wore this hilarious mask.  Alex told me he wants to have at least one more child so I should probably wear it.


3. I turned my living room in to a painting station for doors, and I propped them up with books, cereal boxes, etc.

4. Primed the following (I used a bonding primer for wood); trim in both guest bedrooms,  guest bathroom cabinets and trim, doors (takes twice as long for the doors because I can only do one side at a time). After the primer dried I repeated the step twice but with my interior paint (I used Sherwin Williams Snowbound).  

The entire process above took me two days. After finishing all the trim, I set out to conquer the existing hideous wall paint.

5. Taped off all the trim with delicate painter's tape so I wouldn't ruin the paint job I had worked so hard on. Try to wait 24 hours before taping off to allow it to dry fully. (Taping is tedious and takes a lot of time, but it is worth it)




6. Cut in all three rooms. My absolute least favorite part about painting!  

7. Applied one coat of paint, let it dry and repeated step 6 & 7. I used Sherwin Williams Passive for the guest bedrooms, and Sherwin Williams Gray Matters for the bathroom.  A lot of gray, I know, but I had a ton of the passive left over from the living room, and I was worried I wouldn't like the beige I had previously picked out.  Looking back I might have gone with a very light beige, almost white, but it's too late now.  I picked the dark gray bathroom color on a whim thanks to finding inspiration on Pinterest.  I'm afraid of bright, dark or loud colors so it's a bit of a risk for me.

8. Did a happy dance and then collapsed to the floor malnourished from not eating most days because I wouldn't...couldn't stop painting.


Alex and I tried to go out every night to make use of our time with out Turner.  It was so nice being able to take our sweet time at a restaurant.  We saw Wolf on Wall street (loved it), went to the George Strait concert (Amazing, although he didn't play our wedding song : ( ), hung out with friends AFTER 6pm, and slept in till 10am (oh wait, that was Alex).  I tried not to look at pictures of Turner on my phone, so I wouldn't miss him so much.  On Sunday when he finally came home, I couldn't wipe the huge smile off my face.  We got in the car to head to dinner, Turner is screaming in the back, and we ate in 10 minutes flat. I looked over at Alex and sang "Back to life, back to reality..."
