Austin Fashion Week: Discovery Runway Show

It was my first time to attend a runway show last Thursday, and Austin Fashion Week did not disappoint.  I had a front row seat with my girl Emilie, and absolutely loved seeing the work of up and coming designers.  The rain thankfully stopped right before the event, and I wore my favorite new skort....so comfy.

Top: Vince Camuto. Skort: Abercrombie and Fitch (only $20 right now). Wedges: DV by Dolce Vita via Nordstrom.

Emilie from Fashion Conspiracy
Designer Tinsley Radix - Obsessed with the sequin dress!
Designer Caycee Black

Mysterious by NPN
My favorite designer of the night was Mysterious by NPN. Loved the gorgeous gowns and how the hats increased in size with each model.
After the show, we headed upstairs to the VIP area and scarfed our face in THE MOST amazing desserts. Macarons, cream puffs, petit fours, cake balls, chocolate covered oreos, mini eclairs and more...ahhh, sugar coma.

Decorating a Cubicle

Sitting in a cubicle with absolutely no windows in site is not ideal (I sometimes dream of being a landscaper for a living), but it pays the bills and atleast I am blessed to have a job and a quiet place to work. I spend 8 hours of my day at my desk, so I might as well make it feel a bit like home.

Below are a few snapshots of my cube and how I've decorated. I like to have LOTS of family photos around to keep me motivated. When decorating your desk or cubicle, I would stick with a common theme or color palette to make it easier. I chose gold, black and white based off of the photo frames I already owned. I am also obsessed with free printables, and they truly brighten my mood when I look at them (think Halloween, Christmas, Thanksgiving, Valentine's Day, etc.). During the holidays I usually have a lot more decorations including at least one or two garlands hanging.

RECAP - 2nd #ATXBloggerMixer

These are my people. That's what I think when I'm surrounded by bubbly, creative and ambitious bloggers. I had an absolute blast at the 2nd ATX Blogger Mixer last night at Benji's Cantina. Benji's made us feel like stars by giving us rounds of margaritas, special shots, and amazing food.

Erica was amazing and made the cutest sequin heart pins for all attendees (she stayed up till 5am making them...crazy girl!). Big thanks to Frames Direct and Etcetera, Etc. for the awesome giveaways!

I met bloggers I've stalked on Instagram for months, maybe more, and brand new bloggers. Many of them we'll be attending CAMP this month, and I was able to talk a few in to going as well! I know how intimadating it can be showing up to a social event like this and not knowing anyone, so thank you to those women who came out. There may be some akward or uncomfortable moments, but that's life. Putting yourself out there is worth it. We all left with new friendships and feeling extremely encouraged and motivated to keep blogging!

Here's to the next #ATXBloggerMixer. Erica and I have already started planning so stay tuned (likely in May)!

Preparing for #TXSC CAMP

I'm heading to CAMP in less than a month and I'm super excited. I've never made business cards for my blog, but Indiana advised it's a good idea to bring them. I've never been super serious about this blog, but I might as well since I've put a lot of effort in to it over the past FOUR years. Wow, I can't believe I've been writing this blog for that long.

I have my eye on Minted's business cards. Here are my top picks.

Which one is your favorite?

P.S. For those of you who got engaged over the holidays Minted's 2015 Wedding Invitation Collection just came out and it is beautiful. Right now you can get 10% off + free shipping on wedding invitations, save the date cards and wedding thank you cards.

Baby Blues

My latest post on Austin Moms Blog discusses my experience with the Post Baby Blues. Check it out here.

Date Night

Alex and I have been fortunate enough to have amazing neighbors and friends that are willing to watch Turner when we want to go out for a date night. As much as I like dates just Alex and I, I also think it's important to go out with a group of friends every once in a while. I specifically enjoy going dancing, but I think some of my friends would prefer to opt out of that : ).

A few weeks ago Alex and I dined at Estancia Churrascaria, our first Brazilian Steakhouse experience. Well, the meat was fantastic...all 14 types of it.  I seriously had the meat sweats that night because I had eaten so much. My favorite item on the menu was the Caipirinha cocktail, Brazil's national cocktail. The last time I had one of these was when a Brazilian exchange student made one for me in Poland 9 years ago.  It was just as good as I remembered.

What type of date nights do you prefer? Just the two of you or a group outing with friends? Fine dining or something more casual?  Leave a comment below and you could win a $20 gift card to Estancia Churrascaria! Winner will randomly be chosen 1/11.

Our Debt Free Story

WE'RE DEBT FREE!!!!!

Alex, Turner and I woke up early this morning and made our final payment to our student loan. We have payed off $45,000 in 3 years. A refreshing feeling washed over us as we let Turner click "Submit", and we squeezed Turner with excitement for the future.  We discovered Dave Ramsey a little over 3 years ago, and decided that we were not going to be stuck in the trap of debt. We didn't stick to Dave's plan 100% (we still have a credit card....ahhhh!), but we used his principles.  We saved, thrifted, and made sacrifices to throw as much money as possible towards our student loans.

I used to be a spender...a big spender.  This process has taught me so much about self discipline, and I do love a good challenge.  It was hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel, but we learned it's a slow and steady race. We did try to reward ourselves every once in a while, made a few splurges and went on a few trips.

End of 2011- Read Dave Ramsey's book The Total Money Makeover and decided we wanted to change the way we were spending and living! I had just finished my MBA, and knew I didn't want the debt to linger. We moved to Austin for new jobs!

2012 - Began putting $1,000 a month towards student loans. Found out we were pregnant in February and cash flowed our son's doctor's bills/natural birth (much more expensive than going to a regular doctor....dumb decision on my part).

2013 - Bought our first home, which put a big stop to our saving.  When we decided to buy a house, we saved all our money to put towards closing costs.  During 2013, we did a REALLY bad job of saving as we spent most of our extra income on house projects. We still chipped away at the debt, but with low intensity.

2014 - Did a better job of saving, found a cheaper school for Turner, cash flowed a vacation to San Francisco and NYC (trip has yet to come), and worked a lot of overtime.  In years past we had failed at doing a cash envelope system, but this fall we decided to try one more time! It finally stuck. Spending cash hurts! We found out real quick how much less we could live off of when we spent cash.  Most of our income was going to eating out...way too much!  We now budget $30-50 per week for eating out, and most nights cook at home (ugh...I hate cooking). We are intentional with each paycheck and have envelopes to save up for future events (Christmas, birthday gifts, vacation, car maintenance, hair cuts, etc.).

The past 3 years while Alex has worked at Apple, he has been contributing 20% of each paycheck towards his 401K, flex spending account for daycare, and his employee stock purchase plan.  The biggest contributor towards paying off our debt was our Apple stock.  We sold almost $10,000 worth of stock to put towards our debt.

Our next step is to save 4 to 5 months of income, and then we're going to refinance our home to a 15 year fixed mortgage. We'll also be saving every month for our next car (both our vehicles are 94/95 models).  The next vehicle we buy won't be that nice, but who cares, we'll have payed cash for it! Our financial journey is definitely not over, and there will continue to be obstacles and sacrifices along the way, but we're ready.  We thank God every day for blessing us with a healthy family, great jobs, a home, and teaching us the principles of money. I pray we can help change other people's financial future and help them find freedom in being debt free.

BEFORE AND AFTER: Rocking Chair Makeover

I scored this beautiful and sturdy rocking chair on Craigslist for $25, but it needed an update.  I decided to paint it white (what I paint everything these days) using left over exterior paint from another project.  I had a pillow made (w/the help of my mom) using Bolt Fabric's waterproof outdoor material, which is perfect for outside decor! I love super easy projects like this, because it cost me next to nothing and it's like night and day.

I was perusing through an antique store (Antique Gallery of Round Rock) the other day when I realized I love the booths that have antique/vintage furniture in its original version.  When I approach a shabby chic booth or a booth that has repainted every piece of furniture, I usually walk away.  I like to see furniture in the raw and the original wood stain.  How about you?  What's your go to paint style? Shabby Chic? Modern? Any particular color?

Transitioning to Fall

I'm the first one to say that I dislike the cold...I mean anything below 65 degrees (I love the Texas heat). I really....really don't want it to get cold. I'm having a tough time transitiong to a fall wardrobe, part of that is due to the fact I don't have a large bobudget to buy ots, coats, etc. (we're saving as much as possible to pay off the last bit of our student loans) . I joke that my capsule wardrobe is NOT shopping, and it's pretty true. I'll be keeping it simple this season.

Ruining A Good Surprise

Insert foot in mouth.  I'm infamous for that phrase, sometimes I just say the wrong things at the wrong time.  A few months ago, my sister and I started scheming about taking my mom on a girls trip for her birthday.  We wanted to do something BIG, and show her how much we appreciated her love and service all these years. We hunted expedia for great deals, and finally decided to take her to a place she's never been....NEW YORK CITY!  My sis and I went back and forth through texts about all the things we were going to do (Basically, visit every place in Home Alone 2 and Elf), and about how amazing the city will be during Christmas.  Plane tickets were bought, hotel reserved! We planned on surprising my Mom on her birthday, and only giving her one month to stress/shop for the trip.

Last week, my mom, sis and I were in a group text about something (not pertaining to the NYC surprise), and a few hours later I sent my sister a text saying "Put Mom's Rockette ticket on me."....and guess what I did. I accidentally sent it to the group text! My sister immediately messaged me and said, YOU JUST TEXTED MOM THAT! To which I replied, S&#@! My mom didn't reply, but a few days later she questioned my dad about us planning a surprise trip. Dang it, we were busted.  So, we had to reveal our birthday surprise 2 months early.  Ugh....foot in mouth except with texting.

Good news is....we are going to New York! I've already decided that I won't be looking cute, because I will be bundled in my ugly north face jacket and water proof moon boots. We will be going the 2nd weekend of December, and we already have a few things on our must do list; Rockettes Show, Ice Skating, Hot Chocolate at Serendipity, and seeing lots of Christmas Decor.

Any tips on what to wear at that time of the year?

Night Out with Design Lab

I was invited by my friend Rebecca to attend the grand opening Austin's newest designer boutique, Design Lab. The boutique features a variety of items from jewelry and kids clothing to menswear and women's apparel all created by Texas based designers. I was able to meet the designers of each collection, and fell in love with Daniel Esquivel's collection (Project Runway Season 11 contestant). Design Lab is located near Austin's scenic restaurant, the Oasis on Lake Travis.

It felt really great to get dressed up, and actually put on a dress. This dress had been sitting in my closet since last years TX Blogger Conference. I snagged it for free at the swap, and haven't had the chance to wear it.

Dress: Lulu's
Shoes: DV via Nordstrom
Purse: Lulu's (also from the swap..whoo hoo for free stuff!)

Simple Stripes

As a full time working mom, I'm always looking for comfy clothes that can be dressed up or down.  I spotted this dress at Kohl's on sale for $30, and knew it would be perfect to dress up for work or dress down for a casual weekend (comfy enough to wear while chasing Turner). I went casual here and wore sandals, but I could easily put on a pair of heels and wear it out for date night.

Dress: Kohl's
Shoes: TJ Maxx
Belt/Sunglasses: Forever 21

After Work Style

Everyday after I get off of work, I come home and throw on a pair of blue jean or work out shorts, a sports bra, and a comfy tee.  For the next 3 hours I'll be playing with Turner (mostly outside and it is HOT here). I bought these metallic silver Birkenstocks about a month ago in anticipation for our upcoming trip to California.  I was looking for a casual yet comfy walking shoe, and these are perfect. They have formed to my feet, and I wear them every day after I get home.  I think my style may be getting too casual, because last weekend I wore them on our date night with friends.  I just never want to take them off.  Do you have a pair? If so, what do you think?
