Little Boy

Turner is still my baby, but when I look at recent pictures I've taken of him I realize how much he's grown.  He's obsessed with lawnmowers, cars/trucks/bikes, swimming, and putting on our shoes. Every time he says "I looove you", it almost brings me to tears. Tonight, as I held him while he sat quietly with me on the couch and cuddled (rarely ever happens), I took in a deep breath of his baby smell.  I looked over at Alex and said I hope I never forget that smell, especially when he's 16 and hates me.  I know he won't stay tiny forever, and that's ok, but I hope I always remember these special moments we share together.  Thank you journals and iCloud for helping me to never forget.

P.S. - How cute is this Y'ALL tee?  It's screen printed by Austin's own, Kacie Case, owner of Mama Case Prints.  She has the cutest items, and her little boy is absolutely adorable (think chubby cheeks with the most beautiful curly blonde locks).  She's currently out on maternity leave, but her shop will be up and running soon after.  Check out her awesome Instagram account here!

Turner Jack - 19 Months

My baby is turning in to a little boy : ( . He is at such a fun stage as he learns new words everyday, and they sound so extremely cute when I hear them for the first time. Here's a quick update.

- Sleeps from 7pm to 7am. This amazing sleep is one reason holding me back from having another baby.  I enjoy a full night's sleep way too much, because I know what it's like to not have it. He still sleeps with a pacifier and white noise sound machine.

- Favorite words: See, Hi, Juice, Dada/Daddy, Bike, Car, Please, Bite, Crackoo (mix between cracker & cookie). He just learned the word no, and will repeat it after I tell him no.  And so it begins ; )

- Favorite Foods: Fruit, cheese, macaroni.  We try not to give him sweets, but every once in a while we'll give him a bite of a cookie or ice cream. I've never seen a temper tantrum so bad than when I take away his sweets.

- Activities: Enjoys hanging out with Dad in the garage, walks to the park in his stroller, blowing bubbles, anything involving water

- Random Facts:

  • Loves sticks and rocks.  He will find a stick wherever he goes, and screams bloody murder when I make him leave it outside when it's time to come inside.
  • Dislikes getting dressed and having his diaper changed
  • Loves playing with his cousins and next door neighbors
  • Favorite song to dance to: Soprano's intro music. Is that wrong?

My Parenting Style: Sleep

Sleep. You never know how much you need it until it's gone.  Sleep deprivation has probably been the hardest part of parenting for Alex and I up to this point.  Nothing, I mean nothing can prepare you for it.  Some parents get lucky (I hated those parents that told me there babies slept through the night by 6 weeks or even 3 months), but we weren't so lucky.  Turner was a very gassy baby, and he had silent acid reflux, so he never slept well.  I tried numerous things in my quest to get him to sleep through the night, or at least 6 hours straight.  Here are a few things we tried and learned along the way.

Swaddling: I knew prior to having Turner that I wanted to swaddle him.  The Happiest Baby on the Block swears by it, so I thought I would give it a shot.  It worked wonders for us.  I mean don't get me wrong, it wasn't a miracle blanket that made Turner sleep through the night, but it did calm and soothe him.  I swaddled him for the first few months, until one night I found him face down in his crib still swaddled.  He learned how to roll pretty quickly, so the second I discovered this, I stopped swaddling him.  It was a tough transition to go from swaddling to nothing.

Crib Training: After Turner was born he slept in his pack n' play bassinet in our room for the first few days.  I could NOT handle his little baby moans and groans through out the night, so I had to move the pack n' play to our living room (we were living in a 1 bedroom apartment at the time).  We then transitioned from the bassinet to his swing, due to his acid reflux he needed to be elevated.  I would turn the rocking motion on, and he would sleep SO much longer.  I remember being so worried that I would spoil him by letting him sleep in his swing and rock at night, so during the middle of the night I would sneak in and turn the strength of the swinging motion down in hopes he would sleep being still.

When transitioning from the swing to the crib after the first month or so, I put a heating pad in his crib, let it warm up and removed it just as I laid him down.  This is a trick I probably googled, but I think it helped quite a bit.  It beats laying him down in a cold stiff bed.

Once we moved in to our bigger apartment, we permanently had him sleep in his crib in his own room.  We never had a monitor.  I did not want to hear him unless he was crying/screaming.  That may sound harsh, but it was for my sanity.  I remember being so anxious when I heard even the tinniest grunt, that he would wake up soon, and would want to breast feed (which felt like death, so I dreaded it).  Turner never slept in our bed.  This was off limits for us. I mean, don't get me wrong, there were nights when all I wanted to do was bring him back to my bed and cuddle, but honestly he never slept well with us.

Stomach vs. Back:  I know the statistics, and what doctors advise, but Turner slept so much better on his stomach.  We waited till around 4 months to let him sleep on his stomach, because we felt comfortable with him holding his head up and rolling over.

Cry It Out: Well, this never happened. As a full-time working mom, the last thing I wanted to do in the middle of the night before going to work was listen to my child cry/scream.  Another reason we didn't try the cry it out method was because Turner was a tiny baby, and was in the 2 percentile for weight.  So, when he cried, I was worried he was really hungry.  He never ate a ton, so anytime he was willing to eat (2 am in the morning), I made sure to feed him.  Believe me when I say, I researched and read for hours on how to get a baby to sleep through the night.

Taking Turns: Alex and I took turns on getting up with Turner, but even if Alex got up with him I would still get up (I think it's a mother's instinct to wake up and stay up thinking about your baby until they are back to sleep and not crying).  So, because of this, I usually was the one to get up. Alex could sleep through 30 minutes of crying before he would wake up. Seriously?! How do men do that?

Don't worry, I checked on him to make sure he was alive.  I turned his face to the side, but he moved it back to this position.

The Last Straw: Turner was about to turn a year old, and I had finally had it.  I told Alex it was time we let him cry it out (we had a few failed attempts).  That night we prayed before bed for peace, patience and strength to get through the night.  Miraculously, Turner slept through the ENTIRE night.  Seriously y'all, it was a gift from God.  He heard our prayers, and answered them.  From that night on he slept through the night, maybe a few nights in between where he woke up once, but we just had to stick his pacifier back in his mouth.

Sleep Aids:  We let Turner have a pacifier when he sleeps, and we also use a sound machine (ocean sound).  It's tough when we take trips to listen to the sound machine, but I'm honestly scared of not having it on.

Bedtime Routine: We've never really tried a bedtime routine.  We just make sure he's at home by 6:30/7 to put down to sleep.  Between 5pm and 7pm he's extremely cranky.  At this point (16 months) his routine after we pick him up from daycare is eat, play/read a book, change diaper, put on pajamas and lay down.  He's really great about going to sleep on his own, minus needing the pacifier.  Once I lay him in his crib, he rolls straight on to his stomach and curls up in a little ball...so cute.

What tips and tricks do you have for getting your babies to sleep?! I would have a baby right now if I knew the baby would sleep through the night after a few months.  But, in the mean time I will enjoy my non-interrupted sleep.

Turner Jack - 16 Months

It's been a while since I've given you an update on Turner, so here it goes!

Weight:

  • Around 21 pounds (this has helped me to get lots of use out of his baby clothes)

Sleep:

  • Bedtime: 6:30-7pm  Rise & Shine: Around 6:30am
  • His bedtime routine is eat, play, poop, read.  I turn the lights off, hold him for a few seconds, say goodnight and lay him down.
  • He sleeps with a pacifier, a small blanket and a teddy bear
  • The sound of the ocean serenades him through the night thanks to our sound machine
  • He takes 1 nap at school for about 2 hours (12:30-2:30). When he's at home with us on the weekends he will take two naps for about an hour to two a piece, but it depends on our activities.
Food:

  • Loves his carbs. What can I say, he follows after his mama.  He's starting to get more picky about the meals he eats, but it's hit or miss. One day he loves grapes, the next day he doesn't want to touch them.  Weird. T has also perfected the art of drinking out of a straw, so anytime we're eating out, he wants what I'm drinking.
  • Every morning around 7am, Turner and I eat breakfast together.  I'll make him a waffle and serve it with fruit, or sometimes he'll just eat fruit with cheerios.  Then 2 hours later, he eats his second round of breakfast at school. His teachers laugh at how much he eats, always getting seconds and sometimes thirds.
 Clothing:
  • 12-18 month clothing
  • Can't believe he's still wearing a pair of 6-9 month pants from Old Navy
  • Love shoes! Whoo hoo...he is definitely my child.
  • I've really started to enjoy dressing T like a little man.  I try not to dress him in his nice clothes for daycare. I like the Carter's sets for school since they're soft, cheap and I probably won't save them for the next baby since they have food stains all over them.
Personality:
  • Turner's favorite activity by far is walking around the house like a zombie with a piece of clothing/towel/blanket over his face.  He runs in to everything, but laughs every time.
  • Wants to be outside 24-7, and for some reason is attracted to the road (cue me watching him like a hawk at all times)
  • Loves when we read books before bedtime.  I'm getting tired of the same books he always picks out, mommy problems : )
  • Says "DADA" all the time. "MAMA"....never : (
  • Enjoys playing with any sort of ball. We've got 2 soccer balls, 2 footballs and recently purchased a mini set of golf clubs with golf balls.  I'm a bit biased, but I think he likes playing soccer the most.

We've had a rough week due to teething, but hopefully he'll start to feel better soon.  I can't wait for the warm weather, so we can be outside all day!

Snow Day

Last Friday Austin had a terrible snow storm aka there was sleet and a layer of ice on the roads, therefore all schools were cancelled and work was delayed.  Thanks to this, Alex and I were able to spend the morning with Turner.  We busted out T's newest pair of shoes, and were surprised at how much he loved them. He's used to wearing soft leather shoes, so he looked like a puppy walking for the first time.  I'm so glad we were able to catch this moment on camera.  These are the moments I never want to forget.

Cinco

Welcome to the world Miss Parker Jo! Parker is my sister's FIFTH girl, and I can't wait to spoil her.  I'm thinking her nick name should be Cinco.  I am so glad I was able to see her birth, and witness the cutest little first cry (she cried for 2 hours, but we think it was because she came out so quick).  It was the third birth I have seen of my sister's, and it is such a magical moment every time.

My sister's doctor delivered ALL five girls. He wanted to take this picture ; )

Every Day Cardigan

I have been living in this cardigan! Not only is it super comfy, but it's extremely warm.  I found it at Ross for $20, and w/ a $15 gift card I walked out with a steal.

I'm at home with a sick baby today.  Day care kicked him out for running a fever.  They've also kicked him out for the stomach bug, strep throat and pink eye.  Dear day care, I think you're the problem.

Turner Jack - 12 Months

Turner officially turned ONE on October 19.  It has been a year of learning and pure joy!

Mr. T

- Weighs 18 lbs 13 oz (12th percentile), and is in the 45th percentile for height and head circumfrence

- Loves to be outside.  He was gifted a swing and radio flyer wagon for his birthday, and he is obsessed.  With this beautiful fall weather, I've enjoyed taking Turner for walks every night before dinner.

- Pats Alex's back when Alex picks him up out of his crib.  He also lays his head on Alex's shoulder at the same time, and I think it is the cutest thing.

- Is a walking fool.  This past week he has been walking everywhere, smacking his little baby feet around with his arms raised high.

- Miraculously sleeps through the night.  He wakes up crying about an hour before he wakes for the day around 6:30am, but I think it's because he can hear my phone alarm going off in my room.

- Enjoys music. What baby doesn't?  I like to watch Austin City Limits with Turner, because he seems to really enjoy the live performances.  He hasn't been much of a dancer, which honestly kind of surprises me since he is my flesh and blood.  Right now I think he's having more fun laughing at me while I try to dance.

- Loves when I read to him, but he tries to eat the book about 2 minutes in to the story.

- Is Alex's favorite wood working buddy.  When I need a break from T, Alex will strap him in the baby Bjorn and take him to the garage while Alex organizes his tools and does "man" things.

- When it comes to vocabulary, he can say two words; Mama and Dada.  We haven't been doing a good job of using sign language, so he hasn't been signing to us at all.

- Does a great job eating.  His school teacher says he ALWAYS finishes his meals, and of course he has to be the first one to be fed.  There are times when he shakes his head "no" to certain foods (peas, banana yogurt), but other than that he'll pretty much eat anything.

First Trip to the ER

My poor little baby has had a rough couple of days.  We noticed a fever on Sunday night, took him to our pediatrician on Monday.  They told us it was a viral infection. Tuesday, Alex was just a sick and his Dr. told him he also had a viral infection. They both stayed at home Monday and Tuesday trying to get better. Last night I get a call from Alex while I'm at work that Turner is extremely is fussy and hot. We had been taking his temp through his arm pit, but I told Alex he needed to take it rectally.  Sure enough his temp was over 105.  At that point as new parents we decided to take him to the emergency room of a local hospital.  They tested him for strep, took 2 chest x-rays and gave him baby tylenol and ibuprofen.  Turner fussed most of the two hours we were there.  He was soooo tired, since it was way past his bedtime, and the bright hospital room lights didn't help.  Sure enough, turns out he has strep throat. We were so glad they figured out what was wrong.  Alex headed home with Turner, and I headed straight to CVS to get his antibiotics (thank the Lord for their 24 hour pharmacy).

The nights have been rough for me, as Alex is passed out from taking so much medicine, and I'm getting up with Turner numerous times through out the night.  Like right now for instance, it's 5 am and I'm wide awake as I listen to him try to fall back asleep.  But that's what moms are for, and I know in times like these he needs the nurturing touch of his mama.  I just pray he starts to feel better asap, and that we all don't get strep.

I hear silence so that's my cue to go to sleep.  Good night or Good morning.

Turner's Favorite Things

Here a few of Mr. T's favorite items to date!

1. Gund Teddy Bear - Teddy was the first stuffed animal I bought Turner before he was born, and he loves it. Every time I hand it to him, he screeches and his face lights up. I even took my maternity photos holding Mr. Teddy because I knew he would be special.

2. Baby Bjorn - When Alex and I take a walk or run errands, Turner enjoys being carried in the Baby Bjorn.  It's comfy, durable and easy to put on and adjust.

3. Plush Sophie - We lost the teething Sophie before he got a chance to get attached, but he seems to gravitate towards the plush Sophie that has a rattle inside.

4. Carter's terry pajamas have by far been my favorite jammies for bedtime.  They are so soft and have the cutest little character's on the feet and bottom.

5. Robeez Soft Soles - Turner wears these pre-walker shoes every day to day car to protect his feet as he learns to walk.  We love the elastic sides and leather soles.

6. Yogurt Melts - These sweet snacks have been great when we are on the go, and are great for Turner to practice feeding himself.

Turner Jack - 8 months

Celebrating 8 months of Mr. T today! We're loving this stage as his personality begins to come out.  Alex and I rush home every day after work so we can get in some quality play time before bed.

Turner...

- Has 6 teeth. 3 on top, 3 on bottom. His top two teeth were a doozy (major teething going on), but oh my goodness he has the cutest "Turner Gap".  My maiden name is Turner, and my family is infamous for having a gap right in between our two front teeth.

- Is crawling.  It's so cute when he sees me across the room, and crawls as fast as he can to come get me.

- Eating solids twice a day at daycare.  We've also started feeding him fruit as well as baby puffs so he can practice his pincer grasp.

- Sleep is still a struggle.  He usually wakes up once a night, but some nights he'll wake up around midnight, and then wake once more around 5:30am.  That's the worst because I'll wake up to get him back to sleep, and by the time I get back to bed, I've got to get up in 30 minutes.  His bedtime is around 7pm, and if he only wakes up once, he wakes up for the day around 6:30am.

- Loves pulling himself up in his crib.  Now when I walk in to his nursery, he's usually standing up smiling or crying.  His crib backs up to a window w/curtains and he's constantly pulling on the curtains and trying to get to the blinds.

- Scrunches his nose when he smiles.  My heart melts every time.  It still takes quite a bit of effort to get him to laugh, but he LOVES when I rub my hair across his face and belly.

- We've stopped giving him prevacid, his acid reflux medicine, and he is doing great.  He still doesn't drink the amount of milk most babies his age do, but isn't spitting up or crying when he eats.

- Travels like a pro.  We've been out of town almost every weekend this summer, and Turner does great on road trips.  He sleeps most of the time, and if he's not sleeping he plays with his toys.

- We've still not experienced any separation anxiety which is very nice when visiting friends and family.  He'll let ANYONE hold him, especially if your a lady with long hair and shiny jewelry.
