Little Boy

Turner is still my baby, but when I look at recent pictures I've taken of him I realize how much he's grown.  He's obsessed with lawnmowers, cars/trucks/bikes, swimming, and putting on our shoes. Every time he says "I looove you", it almost brings me to tears. Tonight, as I held him while he sat quietly with me on the couch and cuddled (rarely ever happens), I took in a deep breath of his baby smell.  I looked over at Alex and said I hope I never forget that smell, especially when he's 16 and hates me.  I know he won't stay tiny forever, and that's ok, but I hope I always remember these special moments we share together.  Thank you journals and iCloud for helping me to never forget.

P.S. - How cute is this Y'ALL tee?  It's screen printed by Austin's own, Kacie Case, owner of Mama Case Prints.  She has the cutest items, and her little boy is absolutely adorable (think chubby cheeks with the most beautiful curly blonde locks).  She's currently out on maternity leave, but her shop will be up and running soon after.  Check out her awesome Instagram account here!

Turner Jack - 19 Months

My baby is turning in to a little boy : ( . He is at such a fun stage as he learns new words everyday, and they sound so extremely cute when I hear them for the first time. Here's a quick update.

- Sleeps from 7pm to 7am. This amazing sleep is one reason holding me back from having another baby.  I enjoy a full night's sleep way too much, because I know what it's like to not have it. He still sleeps with a pacifier and white noise sound machine.

- Favorite words: See, Hi, Juice, Dada/Daddy, Bike, Car, Please, Bite, Crackoo (mix between cracker & cookie). He just learned the word no, and will repeat it after I tell him no.  And so it begins ; )

- Favorite Foods: Fruit, cheese, macaroni.  We try not to give him sweets, but every once in a while we'll give him a bite of a cookie or ice cream. I've never seen a temper tantrum so bad than when I take away his sweets.

- Activities: Enjoys hanging out with Dad in the garage, walks to the park in his stroller, blowing bubbles, anything involving water

- Random Facts:

  • Loves sticks and rocks.  He will find a stick wherever he goes, and screams bloody murder when I make him leave it outside when it's time to come inside.
  • Dislikes getting dressed and having his diaper changed
  • Loves playing with his cousins and next door neighbors
  • Favorite song to dance to: Soprano's intro music. Is that wrong?

Turner Jack - 16 Months

It's been a while since I've given you an update on Turner, so here it goes!

Weight:

  • Around 21 pounds (this has helped me to get lots of use out of his baby clothes)

Sleep:

  • Bedtime: 6:30-7pm  Rise & Shine: Around 6:30am
  • His bedtime routine is eat, play, poop, read.  I turn the lights off, hold him for a few seconds, say goodnight and lay him down.
  • He sleeps with a pacifier, a small blanket and a teddy bear
  • The sound of the ocean serenades him through the night thanks to our sound machine
  • He takes 1 nap at school for about 2 hours (12:30-2:30). When he's at home with us on the weekends he will take two naps for about an hour to two a piece, but it depends on our activities.
Food:

  • Loves his carbs. What can I say, he follows after his mama.  He's starting to get more picky about the meals he eats, but it's hit or miss. One day he loves grapes, the next day he doesn't want to touch them.  Weird. T has also perfected the art of drinking out of a straw, so anytime we're eating out, he wants what I'm drinking.
  • Every morning around 7am, Turner and I eat breakfast together.  I'll make him a waffle and serve it with fruit, or sometimes he'll just eat fruit with cheerios.  Then 2 hours later, he eats his second round of breakfast at school. His teachers laugh at how much he eats, always getting seconds and sometimes thirds.
 Clothing:
  • 12-18 month clothing
  • Can't believe he's still wearing a pair of 6-9 month pants from Old Navy
  • Love shoes! Whoo hoo...he is definitely my child.
  • I've really started to enjoy dressing T like a little man.  I try not to dress him in his nice clothes for daycare. I like the Carter's sets for school since they're soft, cheap and I probably won't save them for the next baby since they have food stains all over them.
Personality:
  • Turner's favorite activity by far is walking around the house like a zombie with a piece of clothing/towel/blanket over his face.  He runs in to everything, but laughs every time.
  • Wants to be outside 24-7, and for some reason is attracted to the road (cue me watching him like a hawk at all times)
  • Loves when we read books before bedtime.  I'm getting tired of the same books he always picks out, mommy problems : )
  • Says "DADA" all the time. "MAMA"....never : (
  • Enjoys playing with any sort of ball. We've got 2 soccer balls, 2 footballs and recently purchased a mini set of golf clubs with golf balls.  I'm a bit biased, but I think he likes playing soccer the most.

We've had a rough week due to teething, but hopefully he'll start to feel better soon.  I can't wait for the warm weather, so we can be outside all day!

Snow Day

Last Friday Austin had a terrible snow storm aka there was sleet and a layer of ice on the roads, therefore all schools were cancelled and work was delayed.  Thanks to this, Alex and I were able to spend the morning with Turner.  We busted out T's newest pair of shoes, and were surprised at how much he loved them. He's used to wearing soft leather shoes, so he looked like a puppy walking for the first time.  I'm so glad we were able to catch this moment on camera.  These are the moments I never want to forget.

Every Day Cardigan

I have been living in this cardigan! Not only is it super comfy, but it's extremely warm.  I found it at Ross for $20, and w/ a $15 gift card I walked out with a steal.

I'm at home with a sick baby today.  Day care kicked him out for running a fever.  They've also kicked him out for the stomach bug, strep throat and pink eye.  Dear day care, I think you're the problem.

Letting Go

I often wonder what kind of Mom I'll be when Turner is at the age where he is defiant, strong headed and wants to go adventures that I might be too scared to let him go on.  Growing up I never realized how trusting and patient my parents were of me.  From an early age I was very independent and by the time I was 16 I knew I wanted to study abroad for a year.  Thankfully, they gave me the freedom to dream, and to pursue my passion of learning about other cultures.  I can't imagine the fear my parents had when I told them about my cross country trips across Poland in trains by myself in the middle of the night.  I'm scared to death the day Turner wants to visit another country w/out our supervision, actually I'm scared the day he wants to do anything without our supervision.  But that is where my faith comes in, and I have to rest in God's peace that no matter what he is in control.

My Rotary Youth Exchange blazer.  It brings back so many amazing memories of a
year full of travels and new experiences.

I've already taken small steps in letting go of wanting to be in control. Letting Alex cut Turner's baby curls, allowing Turner to dive in to Indian food (which later bit us in the butt when Turner woke up every hour that night with indigestion...poor baby)...baby steps.

What kind of Mom are you? Or one that you hope you will be? Are you scared to death of the day your baby wants to go out with their friends to a party....movie...drive as a teenager in their car by them self!  Good luck moms, it's going to be a tough but fulfilling road ahead.

Turner Jack - 12 Months

Turner officially turned ONE on October 19.  It has been a year of learning and pure joy!

Mr. T

- Weighs 18 lbs 13 oz (12th percentile), and is in the 45th percentile for height and head circumfrence

- Loves to be outside.  He was gifted a swing and radio flyer wagon for his birthday, and he is obsessed.  With this beautiful fall weather, I've enjoyed taking Turner for walks every night before dinner.

- Pats Alex's back when Alex picks him up out of his crib.  He also lays his head on Alex's shoulder at the same time, and I think it is the cutest thing.

- Is a walking fool.  This past week he has been walking everywhere, smacking his little baby feet around with his arms raised high.

- Miraculously sleeps through the night.  He wakes up crying about an hour before he wakes for the day around 6:30am, but I think it's because he can hear my phone alarm going off in my room.

- Enjoys music. What baby doesn't?  I like to watch Austin City Limits with Turner, because he seems to really enjoy the live performances.  He hasn't been much of a dancer, which honestly kind of surprises me since he is my flesh and blood.  Right now I think he's having more fun laughing at me while I try to dance.

- Loves when I read to him, but he tries to eat the book about 2 minutes in to the story.

- Is Alex's favorite wood working buddy.  When I need a break from T, Alex will strap him in the baby Bjorn and take him to the garage while Alex organizes his tools and does "man" things.

- When it comes to vocabulary, he can say two words; Mama and Dada.  We haven't been doing a good job of using sign language, so he hasn't been signing to us at all.

- Does a great job eating.  His school teacher says he ALWAYS finishes his meals, and of course he has to be the first one to be fed.  There are times when he shakes his head "no" to certain foods (peas, banana yogurt), but other than that he'll pretty much eat anything.

BIRTHDAY Success

Happy 1st Birthday Turner Jack! We had a wonderful party last Saturday celebrating Turner's first year of life.  We couldn't have asked for better weather.  Sun shining, cool air and lots of room on the deck for our family and friends.  Here are a few pics from Mr. T's party.

Enough with the gifts and on to this awesome balloon that can entertain me for hours. - T

Thank you to my family who helped me prepare the food.  I was definitely overwhelmed when planning the menu.  I've never entertained a group of people since I've always lived in a tiny apartment, so I didn't know where to start.  There were lots of lists involved.

Menu:
  • Grape Jelly Meatballs (these are addicting and the easiest thing to cook)
  • Homemade Pimento Cheese & Chicken Salad Sandwiches (thanks to my bro & sis-in-law)
  • Spinach Dip w/Pretzel chips
  • 7 layer bean dip w/Tortilla chips
  • Fruit
  • Chocolate & Vanilla Cupcakes w/cream cheese icing
  • Beer, Sodas, Water
  • Smash cake for Turner

I was beyond proud of myself for making Turner's ombre smash cake.  I don't know why, but I felt like it was my mom duty to make it for him.  I baked 3 layers of funfetti cake on Friday, and Saturday morning I successfully iced them.  It wasn't a perfect cake, but I was excited it didn't fall over or crumble.  It actually tasted quite delicious.

Turner's party theme started from a blue ombre fabric garland that I made.  The best part about it was I could mix and match numerous shades of blue and it looked great.  I didn't have to worry about everything matching.

Decorations:
  • Fabric Garland
    • (see the tutorial here)
  • Happy Birthday Banner
    • (c/o Tucker Reece - Check out these super cute handmade garlands on Etsy)
  • ONE letters - DIY

  • Balloons
    • Royal Blue & Sky Blue - Target
  • Neon Flower Bouquet- Sam's

Now that Alex and I have successfully thrown our first birthday party, I can only imagine how much more intricate they get from here.

Have you thrown a children's birthday party? If so, what are your tips and tricks?

First Trip to the ER

My poor little baby has had a rough couple of days.  We noticed a fever on Sunday night, took him to our pediatrician on Monday.  They told us it was a viral infection. Tuesday, Alex was just a sick and his Dr. told him he also had a viral infection. They both stayed at home Monday and Tuesday trying to get better. Last night I get a call from Alex while I'm at work that Turner is extremely is fussy and hot. We had been taking his temp through his arm pit, but I told Alex he needed to take it rectally.  Sure enough his temp was over 105.  At that point as new parents we decided to take him to the emergency room of a local hospital.  They tested him for strep, took 2 chest x-rays and gave him baby tylenol and ibuprofen.  Turner fussed most of the two hours we were there.  He was soooo tired, since it was way past his bedtime, and the bright hospital room lights didn't help.  Sure enough, turns out he has strep throat. We were so glad they figured out what was wrong.  Alex headed home with Turner, and I headed straight to CVS to get his antibiotics (thank the Lord for their 24 hour pharmacy).

The nights have been rough for me, as Alex is passed out from taking so much medicine, and I'm getting up with Turner numerous times through out the night.  Like right now for instance, it's 5 am and I'm wide awake as I listen to him try to fall back asleep.  But that's what moms are for, and I know in times like these he needs the nurturing touch of his mama.  I just pray he starts to feel better asap, and that we all don't get strep.

I hear silence so that's my cue to go to sleep.  Good night or Good morning.

Turner's Hemangioma

When Turner meets someone new, the first thing they say is "Awww, did he bump his head?" Depending on who's asking; grocery store clerk, co-worker, random lady walking, I adjust my answer. I usually just respond with yes, he's an active boy. But sometimes I'll give them the full explanation of his hemangioma.  A hemangioma is basically a build up of blood vessels.

I find it interesting how it came about, so I thought I would share.

Turner wasn't born with the mark.  A few weeks after birth a tiny light red mark appeared.  I thought he bumped his head. Way to go new mom I thought.  Then about a month later, the mark started to become much rounder and turned bright red.  At this point I'm thinking, Oh no, what's happening to my kid? Our pediatrician then informed us that he had a hemangioma.  Whew...that made me feel better.  We did see a child's dermatologist (or something like that), to make sure we took the necessary steps if it continued to grow near his eye.  Turns out not only did he have a superficial hemangioma (above the skin) but also a deep hemangioma (under the skin). The deep hemangioma protrudes out at times, and has a hint of blue. Thankfully the Dr. said that his hemangioma didn't look like it would spread much farther, and that it does not cause him any pain or discomfort.  She said it can take 1-5 years for it to completely disappear depending on the child.  She gave us some weird medication to put on it (I'm pretty sure it's for high blood pressure), but honestly I've only put it on him a few times.

It took a while for me to get used to, especially when it was bright red and shiny, but now I don't even see it.  It has now stopped growing (it can grow from birth till around 14 months), and is slowly started to fade in the center. I'm thankful it didn't impair his vision, or wasn't on the tip of his nose (Seriously, a woman told me her daughter had one right on the end of her nose. I bet Christmas was a rough time for her!)  I wonder what Turner will think of his little mark when he gets older, or how he will respond to little kids when they ask.  Kids are always so interested. "Mommy, what happened to his head?"  I don't think he'll care, plus I'm going to tell him it is an angel kiss (corny, but I like it).
